Hyderabad: The Medical and Health Department has released Rs 518.29 crore as part of its efforts to take the treatment being extended in government hospitals to that of corporate level. Disclosing this to media on Monday, Medical and Health Minister Dr Lakshma Reddy said that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao released Rs 330 crore for drugs and disposables used in diagnostic tests and post-operative medical care in Vaidya Vidhana Parishad hospitals. Rs 144 crore has been released to teaching hospitals under the control of the Director of Medical Education.

To the one and only cancer hospital in public sector MNJ Hospital the government released Rs 31.29 crore for construction of additional blocks. The government is contemplating to develop it as the state-level cancer centre. The Chief Minister had allocated Rs 3 crore for baby kits meant for neonatal babies. The kits contain baby soap, baby oil, baby powder and diapers. Women who undergo deliveries in government maternity hospitals are eligible to receive the kits. The scheme to distribute the kits will be launched in a month.

The government earmarked Rs 10 crore to procure life-savings drugs, which is first in the medical history of Telangana. To conduct various diagnostic tests in government hospitals and to acquire necessary equipment the government released Rs 144 crore, he said adding that efforts were on to provide all the tests under one roof.

To provide amenities for conducting diagnostic tests in 102 Area Hospitals and district community health centres run by Vaidya Vidhana Parishad, the government released Rs 330 crore and asked authorities to make all amenities to this extent. The state government is keen to set up cancer treatment centres in all districts. A cancer institute has been set up so far in Khammam district. The government has been striving to develop the MNJ Cancer Centre as premier state-level cancer institute.
