Mahbubnagar: The remote village of Palkalapally in Achampet mandal has achieved the distinction of constructing 100 per cent sink pits and rain water harvesting (RWH) pits in the district. Not just this, the villagers have also completed the construction of 90 per cent of individual latrines (ILs) in their households and now they have also taken up the target of planting more than 40,000 saplings in their village as part of Haritha Haram.

According to village sarpanch Yedla Narasimha Goud, the villagers have already planted more than 10,000 saplings and in the next coming few days, are set to complete the target of 40,000 plants. “Already we have planted more than 10,000 plants in our village. Our target is to reach 40,000 ‘mark’ in the coming days. We are successfully implementing all the government schemes and have achieved 100 per cent target in construction of sink pits and very soon we will also reach 100 successes in ILs,” observed the sarpanch.

District Collector Dr TK Sridevi, who visited Palkalapally, was impressed by the achievement and pro-active initiatives taken up by the people in the village. “It is commendable to see that this small village has achieved so much. At present, 90 per cent households have constructed ILs; very soon we are expecting them to reach 100 per cent. If all schemes are implemented as planned, we will surely select this village for the award of best model village,” said the Collector.

Taking part in the Haritha Haram programme, the Collector called upon all the people in the district to take the responsibility of saving the planted trees during the Haritha Haram programme. “Planting a tree is not a big deal, but protecting it is important. As there is no sign of rainfall during the past one week, every individual must take responsibility to protect the planted trees in their vicinity,” said the Collector.

Achampet MLA Guvvala Balaraju, who also took part in the Haritha Haram programme, while speaking on the occasion, said, “Telanganaku Haritha Haram is the third gigantic tree plantation programme in the world, after China and Brazil.” He called upon the people to take part in the novel plantation programme in a big way and make it a success.
