Give a complete make-over to building, vow not to send their wards to private schools

Warangal: As part of the “Save government school” campaign taken up by the residents of Vantimamidipalli in Vardhannapeta mandal, the villagers pooled resources, contacted higher-ups and not only got the government elementary school revived with modern amenities but also got it upgraded up to class VIII apart from introducing English as the medium of instruction.

The lone government school in the village was closed five years ago and it was completely neglected resulting in the growth of wild plants on the campus of the school. Pained at the state of affairs, the villagers recently decided to get the school reopened at any cost. Immediately, they convened a grama sabha and resolved to save the government school from extinction. However, some of the villagers opposed the move as it was a primary school and the medium of instruction was Telugu.

Children of the village and those of neighbouring Nandanam, Inavolu, Kakkiralapalli, Singaram and Punnelu were attending the English medium school in Vardhannapeta. To reverse the trend, the villagers called on Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari and urged him to revive the school, introduce English medium and sanction upper-primary classes to the school.

Later, they again held a ‘grama sabha’ and reflected that the village has been paying Rs 70 lakh to private schools by way of tuition fee and other expenses. They therefore resolved to send the students to the revived school in the village. The meeting also decided to cut the pension, ration and other benefits of those villagers, who sent their wards to private schools in future.

Recently, Kadiam Srihari inaugurated the revived government school that now boasts of a strength of 290. Further, the villagers formed into a committee and resolved to collect Rs 3,000 from each student for development of the school. Using the funds, they created basic amenities in the school. The village committee appointed six teachers and three servants. With manifold increase in admissions, the school faced a shortage of class rooms.

The committee took the problem to the notice of Kadiam Srihari who sanctioned four additional classrooms at a cost of Rs 24 lakh. Besides he also sanctioned Class V111 to the school. People of the neighbouring villages have also started patronising the school. Students of the school are vouching for the fact that their school now has many more amenities compared to private schools.
