Warangal: The Telangana NPDCL has announced a bumper offer to its consumers, thus providing an opportunity to them to pay only a nominal amount irrespective of the energy they consume. It causes a heavy loss to the company as its officials have allegedly made people fix 2.9 lakh new Vision Tech electricity meters which can be stopped from recording the reading using a TV remote.

The officials have allegedly done this with a motive to make money. They have paid Rs.747 for each power meter (total cost Rs.10.45 crore). However, they are refusing to comment on the episode which is being described here as a scam.

The new meters are being used in Warangal, Karimnagar, Khammam, Nizamabad and Adilabad districts with new connections and in case technical problems arise. These meters have been ordered from Vision Tech Company, which has so far supplied 1.4 lakh meters.

These flawed meters are proving to be a boon for the consumers and a disaster for the NPDCL officials, which have found out rather late that they can be stopped from recording the consumption by using a TV remote, as proved by an investigation by HMTV/The Hans India. Consumers Sarangapani and Krishnayya have confirmed that the meters supplied by the company are flawed.

The NPDCL officials are now reportedly breaking their heads how to change the meters, which are causing a heavy loss to the company. They have already ordered Vision Tech to stop the supply. The officials are being criticised for their carelessness in not acting before the meters reached the consumers.

Secretary of district CPI Thakkallapalli Srinivas Rao demanded a comprehensive inquiry into the episode to fix the responsibility of the errant officials. Rather belatedly, the NPDCL officials have warned the consumers that action would be taken if the meters are tampered with. Narsing Rao, Director, told The Hans India that Vision Tech has been served a notice and that the flawed meters of the consumers would be replaced.
