Hyderabad: Condemning the lathi-charge and use of teargas shells on protesters of Mallannasagar reservoir, Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) on Sunday demanded that the State government make public the detailed project report (DPR) of Mallannasagar and seek public opinion.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, JAC coordinator Pittala Ravinder said that the joint action committee seriously condemned the lathicharge and use of tear gas shells on the people who were protesting against the vindictive policies of the State government.

“People have a right to take up agitation as per their will within a democratic framework. If government or its representatives do not hear their plea, people are free to express their feelings in their own way,” he said.

The JAC leader said it was not desirable for the State government to use police force against its own people.

The JAC leader demanded that the government keep the DPR of the Mallannasagar in public domain and seek public opinion.

“Till then, the government should stop forcible land acquisition and stop land registrations,” he said. Political parties - BJP and TDP - too were critical of the police action against the Mallannasagar oustees.

BJP State president K Laxman condemned the attack on the protesters and expressed support to farmers in their fight against the vindictive policies being pursued by the State government.

“The affected people were carrying out their protest in a peaceful manner, but the government has failed to take corrective steps and is not showing even the minimum courtesy to convince them.

The State government should desist from carrying out anti-farmer policies. The BJP stands by farmers in their fight against the atrocities unleashed by the State government,” he said.

Medak Bandh today

Meanwhile, Congress called for ‘Medak Bandh’ on Monday against the brutal police lathi-charge on farmers of Vemulaghat on Sunday.

TPCC vice president and in-charge of Medak district Congress Ponnam Prabhakar has also demanded that Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao take complete responsibility for the police action and resign from his portfolio.

The TDP Telangana unit has also called for a Medak bandh on Monday in protest against the police lathicharge on agitating farmers.

Party’s State Working President A Revanth Reddy alleged that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had taken an unilateral decision to develop the project by ignoring the interests of farmers.

The TDP leader questioned the government for taking up the project when the whole farming community was raising a banner of
revolt against it, he said.
