Thoguta (Medak): The Mallanna Sagar submergence zone has become tense once again following lathi-charge on the villagers of Vemulghat, one of the affected villages, by the police on Sunday as the villagers tried to block the national highway in protest against the land acquisition for the reservoir.

Hundreds of villagers took out a rally from the village towards Kukunoorpally village on the Rajiv Gandhi National Highway. Even as the rally reached close to Erravalli, another village being affected by the project, the police tried to stop the agitated mob.

An altercation happened between the police and farmers. Police opened fire in the air to disperse the stone-pelting protestors.
According to the people, lathi-charge happened not just once, but twice.

Scores of farmers were injured. Even women and children weren’t spared. Some of the women fell unconscious and were shifted to nearby hospitals. “They singled-out people; took them aside and kept beating them black and blue with lathis. Whatever the kind of protest we were holding, it was entirely peaceful.

If they wanted to prevent us from blocking the road, there were other ways to do so. Why beating up the farmers?” asked Ranga Reddy, an elderly person from Vemulghat, who was also reportedly abused and manhandled by the police.

As many as 30 youth from the village were arrested by the police and were taken to undisclosed locations. However, Kukunoorpally SI Ramakrishna Reddy said they were all released. The police say that the mob attacked S Ramesh, one of the constables who tried to stop the crowd.

He has been shifted to Siddipet government hospital for treatment.Hyatuddin, one of the victims of lathi-charge, said the intent of blocking the national highway was to protest against the local MLA, who according to him, was trying to use some of the villagers of Vemulghat to try and convince Banjerupally and Lambadi Thanda, to give away their lands.

By evening, there was heavy police bandobast in the area. Many of the victims were still stranded in other villages, fearing another round of lathi-charge.
