Hyderabad: Accusing the Opposition of adopting double standards on land acquisition, Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao on Tuesday alleged that the Opposition was instigating farmers and villagers and their attitude was stalling development.

Addressing a press conference here at Telangana Bhavan, Harish Rao said the Opposition parties like Congress, TDP and CPM were adopting double standards when it came to land acquisition.

The Karnataka government led by the Congress was the only government in the country to acquire many villages, he said, giving example of the proposal for increasing the height of Almatti dam from 519 metre to 524 metre would result in submergence of 22 villages and 1.20 lakh acre of land.

“What will Congress leader Jaipal Reddy say on this, because there is a Congress government there?” questioned Harish Rao.

Lashing out at the TDP, Harish Rao said the Union Ministers belonging to Andhra Pradesh signed against the 2013 Land Acquisition Act in the Cabinet and the TDP leaders in Telangana wanted the same Act to be implemented in Telangana. The same TDP leaders did not want the 2013 Act for land acquisition in Andhra Pradesh, he said.

He further said that the CPM, which was making a hue and cry over land acquisition, should answer on the Nandigram issue where farmers’ lands were forcibly acquired for setting up industries.

The Minister said the Mallannasagar reservoir would result in submergence of only eight villages and it would store 50 TMC ft of water. He listed out the projects, the capacity and number of villages submerged.

He said that Pulichintala project was for 45 TMC ft but it submerged 28 villages, similarly, Yellampally project was for 20 TMC ft but it submerged 21 villages, Midmanair was for 25 TMC ft but it was submerging 18 villages and the Palamur Rangareddy planned by the Congress was for 115 TMC ft and was resulting in submerging of 33 villages but the TRS government proposed the project with 92 TMC ft and restricted the submersion of villages to six.
