Warangal: The State government is committed for the welfare of the auto drivers and contemplating to offer loans up to Rs 10 lakh to auto drivers to procure auto rickshaws, said Finance Minister E Rajender.

The government was in the process of holding talks with bankers to offer loans to the auto drivers, he said addressing a gathering of auto drivers here.

A public meeting, under the aegis of Telangana Auto Drivers Union (TADU), was organised in Hanamkonda marking World Auto Drivers Day on Monday.

Referring to the various demands put forth by the union leaders, the Finance Minister said the government was planning to offer medical assistance to the tune of Rs 10 lakhs.

Steps would be taken to ensure majority seats in Gurukuls, Model Schools and others to the children of auto drivers and other labourers.

For the first time in the country, the Telangana government has offered Rs 6 lakh ex-gratia to drivers and workers engaged in construction industry in case of death while working.

Measures would be taken to provide accidental insurance all, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, the TADU honorary president, G Ravi Kumar, appealed the State government to set up a corporation with a corpus fund of Rs 1,000 crore for the welfare of auto drivers.

He wanted construction of an Auto Bhavan at each district headquarters.

He also wanted the government to initiate measures to prevent harassment of auto drivers by RTA and police. Due to lack of support from banks to procure autos, the drivers mainly depend on private money lenders.

The auto drivers were often subjected to torment by the lenders to repay the loans therefore the officials concerned should look in to the matter and provide protection to auto drivers from the private lenders, Ravi Kumar said.

The auto rickshaw industry is the biggest employment provider in Telangana. In Warangal district alone, there are more than 50,000 auto rickshaws.

Hence steps to ensure their wellbeing have to taken, he added. MLAs D Vinay Bhasker and B Shanker Naik were present.
