Hyderabad: Healthy winds of change seem to be sweeping T-town since Telugu film viewers are patronising movies that offer variety and have novel storylines served with good entertainment values.

A new breed of filmmakers are treading a unique path, steering well clear of clichéd potboilers and star-studded formulaic films, to win the appreciation of the audiences and their money too.

For instance, a relatively small film Pellichoopulu triggered tremendous hype and acclaim on par with star-studded fare. “The success of Pellichoopulu will surely work like a tonic to filmmakers who want to make healthy and realistic entertainers.

Debutant director Tharun is a man to watch out for, since he has good script sense, command over screenplay and handles a sensitive theme with ease.

In fact, he has given me energy to start a film with new faces” says director Chandra Siddharth, who also pats gen-Y actor Nani for exploring varied themes.

“Nani is rocking with his penchant for novelty and in his latest thriller Gentleman too, he played a character that has negative shades to it,” he adds.

Other thematic films that spun box-office magic this year were Nenu Sailaja, Oopiri, Kshanam, and Kalyana Vaibogame. “Even Express Raja was a good success because of a good dose of entertainment whereas Kshanam was a nail-biting thriller lapped up the viewers, so variety is paying off,” says director Ravi Chavali, but hastens to add, "May be in Kollywood, you can just ride on a novel theme and succeed but Telugu audience patronise films that offer novelty as well as entertainment, so ultimately, it’s a good balance that counts,” he concludes.
