Hyderabad: The Fever Hospital is inundated with patients and the number of outpatients is increasing by the day. On Monday alone 1500 outpatients were treated at the hospital. With less staff and increasing patients, the hospital is bursting at the seams but there is no initiative from the government to improve the facilities.

The increase in number of patients is alarming and this year the rise is unprecedented. In the month of July, 29,412 out-patients were treated. But according to unconfirmed sources, the number was more than 50,000. The hospital turned down several patients who were directed to go to other hospitals.

Dr K Shankar, superintendent, Fever Hospital says, “We admitted 15 patients on Monday. On an average the hospital gets about 700-800 out-patients a day but during the monsoons the number goes up.” Of the 15 admitted to the hospital on Monday, six patients had severe gastro-intestinal problems; two were suffering from typhoid, two from diphtheria and one from mumps.

Another reason for the high number of patients to Fever Hospital is the unabated dog bite cases. There were 22 cases on Monday pertaining to dog bites. Earlier, on a single day in July, there were more than 80 dog bite cases, mostly from nearby districts.

People from Ranga Reddy, Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda districts have been making a bee-line to the hospital. Senior doctors say that the pressure on Fever Hospital would reduce to a large extent only if immediate medication and availability of vaccines are available at the districts especially for dog bite cases.

Worryingly, the rise in diarrhoea and diphtheria cases haves been on the rise. In the month of July, 30 cases of diphtheria were reported. Moreover, Fever hospital is the nodal centre for seasonal ailments and the virology lab is understaffed. A senior doctor on condition of anonymity said that for a hospital of this stature an international standard virology lab is a must.

In the month of April last year the Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao made a surprise visit to the hospital and expressed displeasure on the filthy conditions. One year has gone by and the situation has turned worse. Senior doctors feel that unless the overall infrastructure is not revamped, Fever Hospital would continue to be in the news for all the wrong reasons.
