Warangal: Tension prevailed in Hanamkonda on Tuesday as slum dwellers in large numbers took out a protest rally towards district Collectorate in support of various demands.

The protest was staged under the aegis of Pattana Prajala Samkshema Sangham affiliated to Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), seeking land rights to those living on government lands for several years by building huts.

The police have prevented and arrested the protestors at Kaloji Centre. During the process, the protestors have jostled with the police resisting the arrest.

Speaking to the media, Sangham leaders P Anand Kumar and D Srinivas demanded that the government provide double bedroom houses to all the eligible.

Thousands of rural poor have been settling in the city and they were being compelled to pay huge amounts of money towards rents, they said.

Nearly 40, 000 persons have applied for double bedroom houses but no survey was conducted and not a single individual was allotted a house, they pointed out.

The Sangham leaders also said, “As per the provisions of GO No 58, title deeds and individual houses should be given to those living on government lands. There are nearly 30, 000 such families living at the district headquarters.”

Srinivas and Anand Kumar wanted the government to provide basic amenities in dalit, BC and minority colonies and to clear all the pending applications for SC/ST/BC loans.
