Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has decided to take over unfinished works pertaining to about 20,000 units of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) housing scheme at a cost of Rs 350 crore, with the help of Housing and Urban Development Corporation funds.

The civic body has so far finished 39,494 houses under the housing scheme and handed over 25,000 houses to beneficiaries who contributed 30 per cent of the total amount. The Corporation, under the JNNURM scheme, has decided to construct 46,536 houses.

Of them, the civic body has constructed 39,494 houses and handed over about 25,836 houses to beneficiaries in Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts. About 7,000 houses are yet to be constructed whereas the remaining houses, which have been lying vacant for the past several years, lie in a state of neglect.

Several houses in Trimulgherry, Phoolbagh, Kukatpally and in the peripheral areas of the city have been lying vacant since 2011. A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that apart from repairing and constructing the houses under JNNURM scheme, the civic body would also construct 2,280 houses under Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (Vambay) scheme.

He said that of the 6,608 houses proposed under the scheme, the Corporation has already constructed 4,328 houses and about 2,280 are under progress. “With the delay of 2BHK project, the State government has instructed the Corporation to finish construction of houses under JNNURM and VAMBAY schemes.

The government has also said that the Corporation can avail of a loan from HUDCO,” said the official. He added that 6,410 houses have been occupied by beneficiaries and about 914 houses were yet to be occupied.

He said the beneficiaries have been shortlisted by the Hyderabad and Rangareddy Collectorate authorities and the Corporation would hand over houses to them immediately after they pay 30 per cent of the total amount.
