Warangal: There was no need to built Mallannasagar reservoir as part of Kaleswaram project, asserted senior Congress leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy.

He welcomed the High Court’s decision quashing GO: 123 issued by the State government. The TRS government should learn from Jawaharlal Nehru lift irrigation project in Haryana and Kaleswaram project could also be built in the same way.

Speaking to press persons in Hanamkonda on Thursday, the Congress leader said the TRS government in the past claimed that 160 tmcs water from Godavari and other rivers could be used without constructing reservoirs.

But now it was going for construction of reservoirs, wasting public money to the tune of Rs 25,000 crores.

‘I have thrown a challenge to CM K Chandrashekar Rao to come for an open debate regarding the ongoing projects like Mallannasagar. Two weeks passed but there is no response.

What is the need for Mallannasagar reservoir, when water could be lifted for only 120 days and crop duration is also 120 days,’ he questioned.

Instead of constructing reservoir, the water, after lifting, could be pumped to the farmers directly in phase manner. The government was fooling the public with such projects and causing trouble to them and wasting public money.

The government has to consider redesigning of Mallannasagar project without causing trouble to the public and in a scientific manner following international standards.

The CM was designing irrigation projects without scientific knowledge and was making frequent changes, Shashidhar Reddy noted.

The Congress party would continue its fight to protect interests of people, if need it would approach the court.

The party would take up programmes to create awareness among people affected by Mallannasagar project and would try to recover lands acquired using GO 123, he added.

Ex-MLA B Arogyam, party leaders Namindla Srinivas, EV Srinivas Rao, Katla Srinivas Rao, Manupati Srinivas, B Naveen Naik, T Veeranna and others were present.
