Hyderabad: The South Central Railway (SCR) with 589 electric locomotives has the highest number of such locomotives in Indian Railways (IR) but the absence of an electric locomotive workshop is hurting the SCR badly.

As a result, electric locos are moved to workshops for periodic overhaul (POH) at Dahod in Gujarat, Perumbur in Tamil Nadu and Bhusawal in Maharashtra.

Out of the 589 electric locos, 211 are “homed” at Lallaguda workshop, 219 at electric loco shed, Vijayawada, and 159 at Kazipet. There are 5,270 electric locos with Indian Railways but only six electric loco workshops with a capacity to conduct POH for 426 locos in a year.

It takes 28 working days to complete a POH for one electric loco. As a result, locos that need to get POH once in six years or after completing 8 lakh km, whichever is earlier, are getting POH done once in nine years or after running for 12 lakh km.

M Raghavaiah, general secretary, National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR), said, “SCR is moving locos for long distances between 400 km and 1,400 km for overhauling, mid-term rehabilitation and recabling.

There are vacant lands in Secunderabad and Vijayawada and SCR needs to establish an electric loco shed here immediately.”

The electric locos are declared dead and attached to trains and sent to workshops across the country which takes 7 days one way. “It is high time that an electric loco workshop is established in the SCR,” insisted Raghavaiah.

A new electric loco shed at Guntakal is under construction but experts say that another loco shed would only help in day-to-day maintenance. Once a railway zone touches a holding of 600 locos, it is essential to have a POH along with mid-term rehabilitation (MTR) and recabling (RC).

Every year, over 100 locos are proposed for condemnation and 250-300 new locos are inducted. With the six workshops finding it difficult to fulfill the targets, the need to go in for more workshops is felt. For instance, the Dahod workshop in Gujarat has a capacity of conducting only 54 POHs a year.
