Hyderabad: Communist Party of India (CPI) State Committee on Friday staged a ‘maha dharna’ demanding that the government assign ‘Podu’ lands in the forest areas to tribals and scheduled caste communities who have been cultivating them as per the Forest Rights Act, 2006.

Participating in a dharna here, CPI national secretary K Narayana said his party had been fighting for the strict implementation of the forest rights and had been demanding withdrawal of cases filed against tribals, dalits and Left party leaders who have been fighting for the rights of these people.

“We are prepared to go to jail, but never lose the land which is the bread and butter of these people for decades,” he added. CPI State secretary Chada Venkata Reddy alleged that the government was grabbing ‘Podu’ lands in the name of Haritha Haram.

There are 10 lakh acres of ‘Podu’ lands under cultivation in the State. As per the Act, each family should get 3 acres of land. In realty, so far only 7,993 acres of land had been distributed to 3,000 families.

In some cases, the tribals were being harassed for not giving up farming activity in the forest lands. The dharna was attended by tribal and dalit farmers from all districts in the State.
