NNFI member inspects MGMH.
A member of National Neonatology Forum of India (NNFI) on Wednesday visited MGM Hospital (MGMH) neonatal wing to assess the quality of services, infrastructure and medical equipment available at the hospital.
Warangal: A member of National Neonatology Forum of India (NNFI) on Wednesday visited MGM Hospital (MGMH) neonatal wing to assess the quality of services, infrastructure and medical equipment available at the hospital.
The visit is aimed at issuing of accreditation to the neonatal wing by the forum. Dr Asutosh Mahapatra, who is the secretary of Odisha State NNFI chapter, accompanied by the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) representative, RSV Srikrishna has visited the hospital.
Speaking to press persons, Dr Mahapatra said the NNFI having 5000 plus neonatal specialists as members, is a non-governmental voluntary organisation that formulates guidelines and protocols to be practiced country-wide uniformly in neonatal care.
The main objective of the forum is to reduce infant mortality rate in the country by reducing neonatal mortality rate. The infant mortality rate indicates the medical structure of a country and in India, infant and neonatal mortality rate is very high.
Neonatal mortality rate makes up one third of infant mortality rate, hence it is essential to prevent neonatal deaths to decrease infant mortality rate. Newborn child care is a highly specialised subject and quality in terms of proficiency of medical staff and equipments is essential, he explained.
The NNFI has formulated a facility-based newborn module and it is being followed across the nation. With reference MGMH’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and other related wings, Dr Mahapatra said the standards being maintained at the hospital have been found satisfactory making it eligible for the accreditation.
“We have inspected instruments, infrastructure, and knowledge of technical experts, nurses and doctors,” he said, adding the NNFI issues accreditation for a period of two years on completion of which, the concerned medical establishment needs to go for reassessment.
Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences Vice-Chancellor Prof B Karunakar Reddy, MGMH head of paediatric department Dr B Balram Naik and others were present.
