TPCC to make presentation on irrigation schemes on August 17

Hyderabad: The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) is organising a comprehensive presentation on irrigation projects focusing on “Facts and Falsehoods of this (TRS) government’s claims on projects”, at Ravi Narayan Reddy auditorium, Banjara Hills here at 2 pm on August 17.

This was announced by TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy in a press release here on Friday. He alleged that the present TRS government had commenced unrealistic and irrational irrigation projects in the State.

The contract works awarded so far or are likely to be awarded shortly, were of a value of approximately Rs 83,000 crore for Kaleswaram project, Rs 47,000 crore for Palamuru Rangareddy project, Rs 10,000 crore for Sitarama Project and several thousands of crores for other projects such as Dindi.

“The entire tendering process is believed to have been conducted in a non-transparent, non-global and non-competitive manner with a view to benefit a few favoured companies, and works were awarded on the hugely overpriced rates,” he said.

Reddy contended that no Detailed Project Reports (DPR) were kept in the public domain nor have been made available to even elected members of the Legislative Assembly, despite specific requests to the government.

The ayacut claimed under new irrigation projects was believed to be false and no cost-to-benefit ratio or means of finance had been disclosed to anybody, he alleged.

He further stated that it was surprising that to save submergence of a couple of thousand acres in neighbouring States, the government had redesigned projects and in the process had submerged lakhs of acres of its own small and marginal farmers.

“The irony is that the government is spending thousands of crores on contractors, but is miserly on the resettlement and rehabilitation of the submergence affected villagers. The government is violating Parliament’s Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and forcibly implementing GO 123, causing distress among farmers, landless poor and artisans,” he alleged.
