Hyderabad: The water board on Sunday announced Rs 2.5 lakh ex gratia to each family of the workers who died while working in a manhole at Madhapur on Saturday.

Each of these families would also be given a double bedroom house, while the private contractor entrusted with the cleaning work has agreed to extend financial help of Rs 7.5 lakh to each of the deceased persons’ family.

Four persons- Satyanarayana, Nagesh and Chandu, all GHMC contract workers and Gangadhar, who entered the 20-feet deep manhole to save the three, died of asphyxiation at Ayyappa Society in Madhapur on Saturday.

The relatives and associates of the deceased persons staged a protest at the spot on Sunday demanding the State government to take immediate action against persons responsible for the tragedy and provide aid to families of the deceased.

Bereaved family members also staged a dharna on the road at Manikeshwari Nagar near Osmania University.Meanwhile, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee working president Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka demanded the TRS government to initiate stringent action against those responsible for the death of labourers.

Speaking to media on Sunday, Bhatti Vikramarka demanded the State government to extend financial help to the bereaved families by giving a government job to each. He suggested that the government execute drainage works through sewage equipment.
