Bhadrachalam: The release of notification for payment of compensation to the Polavaram project oustees of Kukkunuru village in West Godavari district has caused a rift in many families. Siblings have started quarrelling with one another seeking a major share in the compensation to be paid to farmers for their submerged lands. Relations between brothers and sisters have strained. Family heads are finding it increasingly difficult to pacify the quarrelling siblings. Some of them are not able to digest the breaking up of their families for monetary gains.

Take the case of Seetharamaiah’s family. The farmer who owns 10 acres of land, has two sons. His eldest son became a farmer and the youngest is an employee. After performing their marriages, the farmer divided his property. He gave six acres of land to his eldest son and four acres to the youngest one. After the release of Polavaram project notification one month ago, the youngest son started quarrelling with his father alleging that he showed discrimination against him in division of property.

Seetharamaiah’s contention that he gave two acres of land more to his eldest son as he is a farmer, failed to pacify him. The bond between the two brothers is broken now. The two siblings are not in good terms. The rift between the two brothers caused anguish to Seetharamaiah. In some families, sisters and brothers started quarrelling with each other over inheritance of land. Cases pertaining to hereditary rights among the close kin are galore. There are also instances of false hereditary claims to corner the compensation to be paid for the submerged lands
of deceased persons who left no will.

In some other cases, children started ill-treating their aged parents demanding that the ancestral property in submerged areas be registered in their respective names. In their attempt to grab the windfall, the greedy family members are ready to go to any extent, ignoring their blood relationship. If the family heads and community elders fail to resolve the disputes among siblings amicably, the aggrieved are not hesitating to file a case in the local police station against their own family members. The old people have expressed concern over the increase in the materialistic attitude of the present generation and the fast deteriorating family values in the present society.

Speaking to The Hans India, Raju, a villager, said ``It is unfortunate that siblings have become rivals in many families after the release of Polavaram project notification. The family values have taken a beating. The quarrelling siblings need to realise the fact that the monetary gains are temporary and family bonds are eternal. The heads of families should prevail upon their children to live in harmony as rivalry among siblings for Polavaram gains will ultimately weaken the very social system.’’
