Kodurupaka (Karimnagar): There were heroic armed struggles against the oppression and atrocities of landlords in 1940s supported by despotic rule of Nizams. The struggle didn’t end even after the merger of Nizam with the Indian Union. Peasant struggle of Sircilla-Vemulawada, the southwest corner of Karimnagar district, 1970s has a special place in history.

Rising from this desolate rocky soil, Kodurupaka Rajavva, put up a brave fight against the feudal landlords of the region. Born to a Scheduled Caste family in Manwada village under Boinapally mandal in the times of ‘Gadi’ rule in the mid 1930s, Rajavva made Kodurupaka, her in-laws’ village, as her surname standing for the rights of marginalised sections in that region.

She became the leader of Rythu-Coolie Sangham and waged a stubborn fight against the Gadis rule braving the police lathis. Shaken by her stubbornness, the local landlords made every effort including prevailing over the government to declare Sircilla-Jagtial areas as ‘Disturbed’ on October 20, 1978 to suppress the fight carried by Rajavva.

Even she was sexually assaulted by the hooligans employed by the landlords on October 29, 1978; Rajavva refused to succumb to the pressure and continued her fight against for the cause of peasants and working class. Moreover, she intensified her tirade against the feudal lords amassing the support of Sabashpally, Nilojipally and other adjoining village.

Rajavva died on August 18. She was 80. A memorial meet was organised by the locals in her memory at Kodurupaka on Sunday. Participating in it, Arunodaya Samskritika Samakhya balladeer Vimalakka said “The commitment displayed by Rajavva was extraordinary. The boldness she demonstrated even after she was sexually assaulted was unimaginable.” She stressed the need for idolising Rajavva in questioning the State of its misdeeds.
