Warangal: Pembarthi which was notorious for illicit brewing of arrack once, is making rapid strides now. As part of his initiative to reach out to people, Warangal Police Commissioner G Sudheer Babu adopted the village with a population of 2,500 in Hasanparthy mandal one year ago. After observing that the free flow of country brew was the root cause of the backwardness of Pembarthi, he cracked the whip on bootleggers.

He brought about a social change in villagers by highlighting the evil effects of bootlegging, which made them shun the illegal activity totally. After the voluntary enforcement of dry law by people of the village, it has started witnessing growth. Pembarthi has achieved the distinction of becoming a peaceful village as no one has been involved in a police case during the past one year.

The Police Commissioner set up 20 committees to monitor the implementation of various development activities in the village. A library was set up in the village to promote socio-economic awareness among people. Study material was also made available to the educated youth to enable them to appear for competitive examinations. About 25 youngsters of the village applied for police constable posts. The tank in the village was revived by the police under Mission Kakatiya.

Speaking to The Hans India, Pembarthi sarpanch Saraiah said ``Our village has witnessed a major transformation. Emphasis has been laid on development of basic infrastructure in the village and maintenance of hygiene. It is on the growth path now.’’ Police Commissioner Sudheer Babu said ``My aim is to develop Pembarthi on the lines of Gangadevipalli, a model village in Warangal district. People of Pembarthi are more enlightened now, which helps them achieve economic growth.’’
