Hyderabad: You cannot miss the hand band on which the tenth commandment, not the biblical one but commandments prepared by social welfare aeroes (swaeros) of the Telangana Tribal Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TTWREIS) on the wrist of Dr R S Praveen Kumar, secretary, TTWREIS. It reads ‘I shall never give up’.

Fresh from a marathon which he completed successfully on Sunday but with no trace of fatigue, Praveen Kumar who has been leading TTWREIS, shares his love for running. “The last time I ran a marathon was in the year 2006 when I was posted in Kosovo as a war crimes investigator. It was very hot and along with a colleague we ran 50 km in five hours,” said Praveen. On Sunday he ran 42-km.

It has been a decade since he first ran the first marathon, did he prepare for this one we ask. ‘I run 30 km every week come what may. The skipping rope and running shoes have been my companions all through the last 22 years. They find a pride of place in my car and if I am travelling in other mode of transport I carry them without fail.”

The 48-year-old officer says he was never a great sportsperson but got interested in running while at the then AP Agricultural University. Running is a passion which he has included even in his work ethic. When he was SP of Karimnagar between 2001-04, he recollects how he had his daily briefings in the grounds and not in the office.

“We would run for 20 rounds and after each round, one constable would brief me.” Wherever he has worked, Praveen Kumar has imbibed his love for sports, just as he has been inspiring students to take up sports as well. From scaling Mount Everest to track and field events, the students of TTWREIS have been punching above their weight. So what does he say about policemen with pot bellies we ask, “Keeping oneself fit is a personal choice but then it helps a great deal and one realizes only when one sees its benefits,” he says.

Talking about his recent marathon, he said at the 30 km mark he was totally exhausted but the 10 commandments especially the last one ‘I shall never give up’ and his inspiration from a senior colleague Maddireddy Pratap who is a gym buddy helped. Dr Praveen Kumar is a truly an officer and a gentleman who is as good on the field as well as in office.
