Nizamabad: Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of Rural Development Arun Barucha said that the Union Government would spend funds worth Rs 80,000 crore for implementing the Swacch Bharat programme in the villages to keep them clean and tidy.

Addressing the District Collectors of Nizamabad, Medak, Karimnagar in Telangana State and also the Collectors of Angul, Gajapathi and Demogarh of Odisha through a video conference from New Delhi on Wednesday, he said that toilets and lavatories was essential to maintain health, hygiene and cleanliness in the society.

It would make the country a better and healthy place to live, he added. The Joint Secretary said that it was important to create awareness among the people regarding the construction of toilets.

He said that the solid and liquid waste management programme should be implemented by utilising the funds of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and also from the State government funds. He said that Tamil Nadu was in the forefront in implementing the programme.

District Collector Yogitha Rana said that 2 lakh families in Nizamabad district need individual toilets and funds were released for 1.57 lakh families out of which, 87,000 toilets were constructed.

She said that 300 gram panchayats and 14 mandals in the district would be declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) by October 2, Gandhi Jayanthi Day.

The entire district would be made Open Defecation Free by January 2017, she added.
