Mahbubnagar: With several areas under the grip of seasonal fevers, thousands of patients are thronging the district government hospital for treatment. Not able to afford treatment in private hospitals, many poor people are coming from far-flung areas of Alampur, Narayanpeta, Gadwal, Achempeta, Kodangal and Amarabad for treatment are facing various problems due to non availability of doctors at the government hospital.

While waiting for the doctors to attend on them, the patients and their attendants have to put up with unhygienic conditions prevailing on the hospital premises. Several pigs are roaming around the hospital premises giving jitters to the patients.

“I have come all the way from Narayanpeta for treatment; however the doctors are not available in the hospital even at 11.30 am. First day, I waited for 2 hours for the doctor and after checkup when I went back with the tests reports we were told that the doctor has left for the day, we are forced to stay for one more day,” said Shakuntalamma, a patient at the hospital.

As per time table, the doctors must be present in the hospital by 9 am but no doctor turns up in time and the patients are forced to stay in queue for hours together. According to the patients, majority of the doctors come after 10 am; sometimes at 11.30 am.

They leave at around 12 pm. It is also alleged that many government doctors are also running their own clinics, nursing homes or sometimes working in private corporate hospitals. Since they are in a hurry, they treat the patients with least care. There are occasions when the doctors refer these poor patients to private hospitals.

“It is an open secret that all government doctors have their own clinics and also working in private hospitals as consultants. Because of this they are not putting their hundred percent efforts to treat the poor patients in government hospitals. Majority doctors are prescribing medicines from outside on the pretext of non availability of essential medicines in the government stores.

In all cases, the poor patients are at the receiving end and becoming debt ridden with increased healthcare costs,” said a doctor on anonymity. Though the Health Department is taking efforts to upgrade the district government hospitals, it is not getting enough support from the medical, para-medical and support staff.

Not just this, the sanitation is given scant regard. The sewage openly flows on the hospital premises with scores of pigs flocking all around posing health hazard. “Even after many complaints to the officials there is no response. Officials are least bothered about the cleanliness on the hospital premises.

There are hundreds of pigs roaming in and around hospital. Instead of getting cure, the patients fearing of getting infected with some other diseases due to the pathetic sanitary conditions in the hospital,” said a patient.
