Sangareddy: Looks like the Pollution Control Board (PCB) has got into damage control mode after miserably failing to control pollution of water bodies by factories in Medak district.

District Administration and PCB are now promoting eco-friendly Ganeshas for Ganesh Chaturthi festival on September 5. On Saturday, several clay Ganeshas were being sold in a stall, at the main entrance of the District Collectorate, by none other than the officials of Medak PCB.

The Ganeshas were made by sculptors in Hyderabad and were being procured by district administrations across the State. Various models of Ganeshas are being sold and the idols are pretty attractive. Believe it or not, they cost just Rs 5.

“We opened the stall today (Saturday) and we have been able to sell 30 Ganesh idols,” said Laxmi Narayana, a PCB official, who was at the counter selling the idols.

According to the officials, the main rush would be on September 4, one day before the festival kicks-off.

The officials said that people could use natural colours like turmeric, kumkum, henna and so on, to make the idols more attractive, at the same time avoiding paints which could harm the environment.

However, onlookers found it ironic that there was a flexi banner right behind the counter explaining why clay Ganesh idols were good for the environment.

Credits were also given to the District Collector and PCB for coming together for the noble cause.

Flexi banners are non-biodegradable and are made of poly-vinyl chloride, which causes serious environmental damage and can cause cancer and infertility among people.
