Hyderabad: Stating that the poultry industry was in doldrums, Hyderabad senior egg dealer M A Raoof Ghazi demanded that the State government restrict the hatcheries and fix rates of eggs by Animal Husbandry Department. He also demanded that the department run the egg trade, otherwise the poultry industry would be ruined and banks would meet heavy losses due to the ‘extinction’ of poultry industry.

The egg dealer stated that the poultry industry was badly affected due to the irresponsible functioning of hatcheries. He reminded that in 1982, National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) was established for business of eggs, for deciding egg rates at farms depending on the capacity of poultry farmers, dealers and hatcheries based on market demand.

The NECC had decided the rate of a chick at Rs 4, but later on, rate of eggs was decided by hatcheries which enhanced the rates of chicks and eggs. As a result, egg dealers were finding great difficulties, he said.

The hatcheries, by showing fake demand for eggs, cheated farmers and fixed the rate of their chicks at Rs 35 each and derived huge benefits from enhanced rates. Due to this, poultry farmers were forced to approach banks and obtain loans. Farmers were facing many difficulties because the production was 30 percent more than market demand, leading to wastage of excess produce, he said.

Out of four crore eggs produced daily in Telangana, it eats only 1.5 crore eggs daily and the remaining stock is exported to other States. “But there is excess production of eggs than market demand due to malfunctioning of hatcheries,” the senior egg dealer said.
