Warangal: Farmers, who have taken up banana cultivation using saplings, which they believed were of good quality, but turned out to be fake, are in doldrums, as a Hyderabad-based lab has cheated them. Banana plantations in Warangal are renowned across the State.

About 40 ryots of Pandikunta village in Mulugu mandal had purchased 65,000 banana saplings during this summer from a Hyderabad-based lab at the rate of Rs.12 each. They lost out after investing Rs.1.2 lakh per acre on account of planting fake saplings, as they can’t hope to recoup the amounts. The lab which promised to compensate the farmers has now allegedly gone back.

The ryots had planted the saplings in 65 acres. At the harvesting time, they realised that the saplings were fake, as they did not grow to the desired level. The ryots informed the lab manager, who interacted with them. He conceded that 20 per cent of the saplings had turned fake and promised in writing to recommend payment of compensation within ten days. The compensation is yet to reach the farmers till date.

The angry ryots gheraoed the lab’s managing director, who managed to escape with the help of the police.According to local residents, the MD is claimed to have blamed the farmers saying that they lacked awareness to raise banana plantations.

The plants were expected to attain a height of nine foot and yield 40 tonnes per acre. But the plants reached only 3.5 ft and the yield was only five tonnes, pointed out some farmers. Ryots Rajender Reddy, Ramchandru, Ramana Reddy and Narsimhulu told The Hans India that they had complained to the district collector, explaining the injustice done by the lab and the subsequent loss they had suffered. They also complained to the Horticulture department officials.
