Mahbubnagar: More than a decade-long wait of farmers of Kollapur and Nagarkurnool Assembly constituencies is fruitful finally with the commissioning of Lift 2 and 3 of Mahatma Gandhi Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme.

Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao inaugurated Lift 2 and 3 of the scheme at Jonnalaboguda and Gudipalli on Thursday after the successful conduct of trial run for four days. Only one pump each was switched on at Lift 2 and 3 of the irrigation scheme.

The Kalwakurthy scheme was envisaged with lifts at Yellur village in Kollapur, at Jonnalaboguda in Pedda Kothapalli and at Gudipalli in Nagarkurnool mandals to irrigate 3.65 lakh acres of land in the district. The scheme taken up way back in 2005 was way behind schedule. The first lift of the scheme was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on September 16, 2012.

After the formation of separate Telangana, the State government initiated measures to speed up the execution of the scheme by allocating adequate funds. The Irrigation Minister closely monitored the work progress by making regular inspection of the project sites. As per the project design, Lift 2 and 3 possess five pumps each.

Thousands of farmers in the two Assembly constituencies will get better irrigation facility for their farm land once all pumps become operational. The commissioning of Lift 2 and 3 of the scheme rekindled the hopes of farmers of Kollapur and Nagarkurnool as they can raise irrigated dry crops in Kharif though the season is coming to an end.

According to irrigation officials, 70 per cent of the works of the scheme have been completed so far.Speaking after inaugurating the Lift 2 and 3 of the irrigation scheme, Harish Rao promised to complete the remaining 30 per cent of the project works by next Kharif season.

A sum of Rs 2,000 crore is needed to complete the irrigation scheme which draws water from the backwaters of Srisailam reservoir. The TRS government was committed to safeguarding the interests of small and marginal farmers by completing the pending irrigation projects in the State on a priority basis, he said.

Farmers of the two Assembly constituencies hailed the State government for commissioning the Lift 2 and 3 of the scheme though the flow of water in Krishna River is not enough to meet the irrigation needs of the district fully.
