Munagala (Nalgonda): People of Nandyalagudem in Atmakur panchayat are reaping good profits through sericulture. It is Nandyala Krishna Reddy (65) who initiated them into sericulture. About 30 of the total 45 families in the small hamlet are engaged in sericulture now. Attracted by its profits, many farmers in the village turned sericulturists by stopping cultivation of traditional crops.

On the advice of Gaddipalli Krishi Vigyan Kendra secretary Ganta Gopala Reddy, the sexagenarian took up sericulture in 2010. Krishna Reddy who started sericulture on a small scale six years ago, is now supplying silkworms to sericulturists of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. After achieving success, he started motivating fellow farmers to take up sericulture.

He received several awards in recognition of his efforts to promote sericulture. Speaking to The Hans India, Krishna Reddy said he used to cultivate paddy and cotton earlier. ``Sericulture has proved profitable for me and others and it ushered in prosperity in the village.’’

His son Bhargav Reddy is also engaged in sericulture. ``I took up sericulture after quitting my private job in Hyderabad. We are raising mulberry plantations in the village. Our income is on par with that of IT professionals. Sericulture needs to be promoted in a big way by the government to strengthen the rural economy.’’
