Sangareddy: In a morbid development, water contamination has been causing serious illnesses among people of Medak district for the past few days. Over the weekend, it has caused two deaths and at least 50 people have been reportedly admitted to various hospitals across the district.

The people of Korpol village in Pulkal mandal and Kishan Naik thanda in Narayankhed mandal have been suffering from fever, vomiting and diarrhoea for the past few days. People of both the villages have been drinking unsafe and uncured water due to shortage of water.

In Korpol village, it all started when water from the drains entered leaking pipeline which supplies bore water to households. Scores of people fell ill after drinking the water on last Friday. Pochamma (60), a resident of the village and Budemma (55), a resident of Gouticherla who came to her maternal home, died in Korpol over the weekend reportedly after drinking the contaminated water.

At least ten more people were admitted in Sangareddy Government Hospital and one was shifted to a private hospital in Hyderabad. A few patients are being treated in the village by a group of medical practitioners who held a medical camp in the village to address the emergency.

In Kishan Naik thanda of Venkatapur village in Narayankhed mandal, the government bore-well has not been functioning for a long time. Despite the villagers taking it to the notice of the local Sarpanch, every time promises were made, but the issue was not resolved. Without much choice, the residents started fetching water from a bore-well in a private farmland, where they all wash their clothes (with detergents).

After drinking that water, they have been suffering from similar symptoms as experienced by the villagers of Korpol. Some of the villagers have been admitted to the Primary Health Centre in Narayankhed. Those who could afford Rs 16,000 to Rs 20,000 for treatment got admitted in private hospitals.

A medical camp has not yet been held by doctors in the hamlet till Monday. Though Shanta, ANM of the village told The Hans India that almost all the cases were under control and that no new case was reported on Monday. However, the problem of drinking water still persists, putting the people to serious health risk.

It is during Gram Sabha programme that issues like water and sanitation are identified and recorded in these villages. Seasons have changed and as always, monsoons brought with them grave dangers of water contamination, mosquito menace and spread of other communicable diseases.
