Warangal: In what is termed as an unmindful act of the administration, the budding players of the district sports hostel and others, who are already fighting against the odds to make do with the whatever facilities available, are put to hardship at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JNS) here.

This is neither the first nor last time. There are umpteen numbers of times the JNS has been rented out to conduct meetings of various political parties and devotional discourses. Every time, when the facility was rented out to such meetings, the under-staffed grounds men have their task cut out to bring the track and field back in shape.

And the upcoming political rally is no exception. The track and field of the stadium is totally damaged on Tuesday ruthlessly trampled under the wheels of cranes and heavy vehicles ferrying material for the installation of high-roof shelter for the public meeting. The administration which let out the stadium for Rs 50,000, will have to pay a heavy price for it.

“Albeit renting out stadiums to political meetings and devotional discourses is not a new phenomenon in the State, but there needs to be a rational thinking to ensure sporting activity go unaffected. Such non-sporting events are causing a lot of inconvenience to the boys and girls of the sports hostel located on the stadium,” K Sarangapani, senior athletics coach, told The Hans India.

Stating that district is hosting the State junior’s athletics meet next month, he said that it takes a lot of time and finances to repair the track. District Sports Development Officer G Indira, who agreed that ground was in a bad a shape, said that permission was given for the conduct of a public meeting on September 17 at the behest of the joint collector. It’s learnt that she apprised of the situation to the additional joint
collector.

Kheer Singh, a retired HWO employee and also a member of the Walkers Club, said: “The stadium has become an income generating source for the authorities who don’t even pay attention to provide basic amenities on the premises. The recently conducted physical fitness tests for army recruitment rally, sub-inspector and constable aspirants also caused lot of inconvenience to the players.”

As the stadium is located a stone’s throw away from the Hanamkonda main bus station, everybody wants to conduct their programmes here, he said, demanding the authorities to find another suitable location.
Meanwhile, it’s alleged that whoever conducts their programmes in the JNS pay rent for one day and uses it for many days.

Recently, when Transport Minister Patnam Mahender Reddy inaugurated 24 RTC buses sanctioned under JNNURM scheme, all the buses were lined up in the stadium.
