Several roads across the city were damaged and this is likely to cause greater problems, especially as Ganesh immersion is to take place on Thursday.

A dilapidated building collapsed at Hyderguda. However there were no causalities since no one was there in the building at that time.

The GHMC Commissioner held emergency meeting with the officials and directed them to see that people in dangerous buildings vacated them immediately. He also asked monsoon action teams’ to jump into action soon after they get a complaint from the people.

The areas which were affected by rains were Madhapur, West Marredpally, Tank Bund, Shapur Nagar and Malkapur.

The Corporation officials claim that as many as 197 grievances pertaining to road damages, building collapse, falling of trees were registered with the civic body. About 40 areas in the city had witnessed power cuts for at least four hours.

Adding to the woes, hour-long traffic jams were witnessed in Tolichowki and Hi-tech city. Some areas, including Nizam Colony and Nadeem Colony, were inundated by the rain water. Residents of these areas claimed that it has been a common site.

Sharing his experiences, MD Aslam said that the stretch adjacent to Ruman Hotel was filled with rain water due to poor sewerage system and the same had been aggravated with the continuous rainfall.

“We lodged several complaints to the Water Board, GHMC and local Corporator prior to the festival but the situation remained unchanged spoiling the festive mood,” he said.

Techies in Hi-tech city expressed their ire over GHMC officials for their negligent attitude despite payment of huge taxesing Rs 38,000 towards income tax. Rajeev Kumar, a 30-year-old software engineer working in an MNC, said that there had been heavy water stagnation near the underpass at Hi-tech city MMTS railway station.

“The sewer water got into our cars resulting in damage to the vehicles. Despite paying heavy amounts as taxes we are forced to pass through the sewer water,” he rued.

Roads across the procession routes have been severely damaged. Though the GHMC Commissioner instructed the officials to take up the road repairing works, it has become a herculean task due to continuous rainfall.

Several low-lying areas, including Serilingampally, Chandanagar, Balanagar, Khairatabad, Narayanguda, Banjara Hills, Gandhi Nagar, Kavadiguda and parts of Old City were under knee-deep water.
