Karimnagar: Incessant rains that lashed the city during the last few days caused an estimated loss of Rs 5 crore. The 17-cm rainfall damaged almost all the roads in the city besides rainwater mixed with drainage water entering into the houses in low-lying areas.

The drainage lines that were filled with garbage, overflowed on to the main roads. The buildings that encroached upon the drainages also contributed to the overflowing. Even in some of the upland areas of the city, the same scenario was witnessed.

As a result of the recent rains, not even a 100-metre stretch was left without potholes out of the 14.5 km-long “main roads” in the city. Many roads that were laid in the recent past were also damaged.

A number of potholes dotted the roads that connect Warangal and Hyderabad from Kaman Chowrasta. The IB Chowrasta turning point where the movement of VIPs is more, the patchwork that was done a month ago also vanished. The bridge that caved in at Tirumala Nagar due to the recent rains, also stands as an example of the inefficiency of the government officials. The officials appear to be interested in benefitting the contractors rather than ensuring quality of work and its durability, the residents of the area said.

When the Chief Minister visited the city for the first time in 2015, he had sanctioned Rs 46 crore for repairing the roads. The works are still in progress, though started in 2015. So far, the works relating to only 8-km road were completed out of the 14.5 km. Even this road is also damaged for lack of quality because of the recent rains.

People are of the opinion that quality should be ensured by the officials when it came to laying of roads and the Corporation officials should also see to it that garbage was removed from the drainages periodically.
