Warangal: An attempt to take a ‘selfie’ against the backdrop of scenic Dharmasagar Tank about 20 km away from Hanamkonda proved fatal for four students of a local engg college and another youth on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Pathi Sravya Reddy (19), Polineni Vinuthna (18), Karne Sivasai (19) and UVSN Srinidhi (19) studying third year CSE at Vaagdevi College of Engineering, Bollikunta and Polineni Sivasai Krishna (20).

Sivasai and Vinuthna were said to be siblings and they were staying at Balasmudram in Hanamkonda. Sravya lived at Ashoka Colony while Sivasai at Excise Colony and Srinidhi at Waddepally in Hanamkonda.

An eyewitness Ramya Prathyusha, who went to the tank, along with the deceased students, reportedly told the police that her friends had entered the waters to catch happy moments in a ‘selfie’ by standing on a rock on the banks of the bank. But they accidentally fell down and drowned in the tank.

Meanwhile, Prathyusha, who too fell down in the waters, was saved by some students belonging to another engineering college who came to visit the tank at that time. But they could not rescue the others.

The Dharmasagar police team led by CI Rajaiah retrieved four bodies with the help of the local fishermen. One more body was fished out late in the day.
