Funds-starved Urdu Academy

Hyderabad: Starved of funds for the last nine months, Computer Training cum Library Centres functioning under the Urdu Academy are on the verge of closure.
In districts like Khammam, Mahbubnagar and Medak, the centres could not even pay the rent for the buildings and electricity bills and were shut down. The contract employees of these centres are running from pillar to post to find a solution to their problems.

The staff who had hoped that the TRS government would regularise their services, say they have not been paid their monthly salaries for the last two months, forget about regularisation of their services. This has forced them to take loans, which is adding to their woes. About 200 contract employees working in 43 centres across Telangana, are now in distress and are seeking immediate intervention of the State government.

Started in 1999, most of the computer training centres have been functioning from rented buildings. The government used to pay the rent besides salaries for two employees (Rs 8,000 each) and one subordinate (Rs 5,000). There has been no hike in the salaries since its inception.

Besides several employees’ organisations, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi had also made a representation to the State government seeking regularisation of their services as they have been working in the centres for nearly two decades. However, the officials of the Telangana State Minorities Finance Corporation (TSMFC) and the Urdu Academy have continued to play blame game as the entire administrative power has been transferred to the former, but subject of finance still lies with the latter.

Speaking to ‘The Hans India’, TSMFC MD Shafiullah said that the budget for the centres was yet to be released, hence the problem persists. “The account has not been transferred to the Corporation and still lies with the Urdu Academy,” he said. However, Prof SA Shukoor, secretary, Urdu Academy, said that the problem should be resolved by the Corporation as the administrative power now was with the Finance Corporation.
