In an important development, the Telangana State public prosecutor C Pratap Reddy informed the High Court at Hyderabad that he would advise the Hyderabad police to add Section 325 of Indian Penal Code in the case of a drunken doctor, who rammed his Honda City car into the vehicle of a retired Captain incapacitating him for the rest of his life.

This section deals with those who voluntarily cause grievous injuries to others and carries a maximum punishment of seven years jail. Dr T Bhaskar of Hyderabad, whose father Captain T Kameswara Rao was severely injured in the accident on July 16, filed a writ petition, seeking harsher sections than the mild ones slapped by Hyderabad police that resulted in the accused doctor getting station bail.

The matter came up for hearing before Justice M S Ramachandra Rao on Monday. The petitioner’s counsel S Vani urged the court to ensure stringent punishment to such intoxicated drivers, especially to the doctor in the present case who knew the consequences of such drink- driving.

The judge also felt that this was a serious matter that needed examination and sought the assistance of the PP who informed the court that he would advise the police to add Section 325 of IPC (Voluntarily causing hurt). Noting that all cannot come to High Court and get justice, the judge said t the authorities must take things seriously in such issues. The matter has been posted to next week.
