The District Collector also inspected the services made available to the pregnant women at various anganwadi centres in the town. She told them to consume Arogyalakshmi nutritious food made available in the anganwadi centres. Along with the nutritious food, pregnant women should also take iron tablets and take vaccination drops, she added.

Collector Rana said that the costs of diagnostic tests and vaccination drops were very expensive in private hospitals and the poor cannot bear such huge financial burden. Hence, she urged the poor to undergo such tests in government hospitals free of cost.

In government hospitals, most of the deliveries were normal whereas in private hospitals, they unnecessarily perform caesarian operations at a very high cost ranging anywhere between Rs20,000 to Rs 30,000. In high risk cases, caesarian operations would be performed free of cost, she added.

The District Collector advised the people to spend money on the education of their children instead of wasting it in private hospitals. She said cash awards of Rs 1,000 were being given to encourage people to join government hospitals undergoing deliveries.

Such prize money should be utilized for purchasing nutritious food to lactating mothers, she added. She inquired about the health of one Shyamala, who underwent a delivery in the anganwadi centre on Tuesday. She also appreciated the efforts of Shyamala’s mother-in-law for helping her in the hospital.

Several anganwadi workers, social and community health workers were present on the occasion.
