Osmania University students demand action on non-boarders

Hyderabad: Tension prevailed in Osmania University as non-boarders and boarders entered into a brawl over sharing of hostel facility.The trouble began in the C-hostel on Tuesday night, when non-boarders allegedly threatened and assaulted the regular hostellers and asked them to choose another room for staying. A hosteller on condition of anonymity said that they have been getting threats from non boarders for quiet sometime who were insisting that they vacate the rooms.

The boarder said notwithstanding the pressure from the non-boarders, he continued to stay with one of his friend in another room. At least six to seven non-boarders were illegally staying in a single room, the students said. Both boarders and non-boarders filed complaints against each other in Osmania University Police Station.

Following assault on them, the students called for campus bandh on Wednesday. About 50 students staged dharna and burnt effigy at University College of Arts and Social Sciences demanding action against the non-boarders.A senior official of the university said that non-boarders menace had become more in the recent past. He said following raids by the university officials, non-boarders were locking the rooms. “We are breaking the locks and giving accommodation to the newly admitted students,” he said.
