Warangal: Was it the same bone dry lakebed that he had seen a few months ago? This is the question that turned out to be a puzzle for the Warangal Police Commissioner G Sudheer Babu, who hitherto had cracked many a criminal case with utmost ease during his career, when he had the first glimpse of the Konayakunta tank near Vangalapalli village under Station Ghanpur mandal on Tuesday.
When the government launched its flagship programme Mission Kakatiya of rejuvenating a whopping 46,531 tanks in the State where tanks are lifeline owing to the State’s geographical positioning, to chip in with their mite to the cause, the Warangal Police Commissionerate has adopted six minor irrigation tanks in the district to restore them to their original capacity.
Against this backdrop, incessant rains throughout the region in the last few days have turned out to be a boon for armers as majority of water bodies wore a replenished look. Konayakunta lake is one among the six tanks adopted by the Police Commissionerate is also full to brim. The others are… Golam Cheruvu (Hasanparthy mandal), Nashkal Cheruvu (Station Ghanpur), Siddeshwara Gundam (Hanamkonda), Vanamarimatikunta (Raiparthy) and Bollikunta Cheruvu (Sangem).
In a bid to enthuse the force, the Commissioner led by example by taking part in the restoration works of all the lakes. What the Commissioner believes is that police are not just meant for ensuring law and order; times have changed to look beyond it. Apparently dumbstruck seeing the Konayakunta lake brimming with water, Sudheer Babu said “The tank was bone dry with no signs of greenery around when we launched restoration works. Now the tank wore a new look.” With majority of cultivated area in the State is rainfed, revival of tanks is of immense help in transforming the lives of farmers, he said, offering prayers at the Konayakunta lake for the wellbeing of the people.
Speaking to The Hans India, Vangalapalli Sarpanch Bukya Sudhakar, who is also a farmer, said “Nearly after a decade-and-a-half, the tank has come to life. The efforts of the police department in promoting the Mission Kakatiya programme are by no means trivial.” He thanked the Commissioner for bringing back the tank to its original capacity.
