Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has decided to constitute six committees to identify encroachments on nalas, lakes and others water bodies, which are obstructing the free flow of rainwater leading to inundation of roads and colonies.

According to the preliminary survey conducted by the civic officials, there are over 30,000 encroachments along nalas, the Musi River and several lakes.

The GHMC teams during the last three days had demolished over 300 structures. The demolished structures had come up at the Full Tank Level of city lakes and nalas.

During the drive, the officials had faced several technical problems. In many cases the property owners possessed “no objection certificates” issued by the Irrigation Department and title deeds by the Revenue Department. It is, however, to be noted that they were all illegal structures, the civic officials said.

A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that to put an end to the confusion between various wings of the government the GHMC had decided to constitute six committees comprising officials from Irrigation, Revenue and Town Planning Departments to clinch the issue.

He said each committee would consist of 8 to 10 members. The committee would examine whether the structure was constructed on a private or government land, commercial or residential property and whether it belonged to below-poverty-line families.

He said the civic body would pay compensation to the owners whose property would be demolished if it was constructed in accordance with the rules. He also said all BPL families would be rehabilitated in VAMBAY houses, community halls and others temporarily.

The official further said the civic body would file cases against the land-grabbers to see that they are arrested under preventive Detention Act.

He also clarified that the Kirloskar Committee in its report had suggested that not more than 28,000 structures, which were found to be obstructing the free flow of rainwater, be razed.
