Mission Kakatiya yields results

Nalgonda: Mission Kakatiya started showing good results after the recent heavy rains in the district. The cultivation under ayacut is likely to increase from 40,000 acres to 1.5 lakh acres in rabi season due to restoration of several tanks under Mission Kakatiya and the rains.In the first phase of Mission Kakatiya, 325 tanks were fully restored in the district. Restoration of 1079 tanks were taken up under second phase and 80 per cent of tanks were restored.
Out of total 4,762 tanks in the district, 1,534 tanks were brimming with water, 1,534 tanks received 75 to 100 per cent water of their total capacity, 1,067 tanks received 50 to 75 per cent and 745 tanks received 50 to 25 per cent water due to the recent rains. Restoration of feeder channels helped in getting rain water from down-level areas while desilting helped to store more water.
Superintendent Engineer (Irrigation) Dharma Naik said the desilting works and feeder channels restoration works of all the tanks were completed, which were taken up under second phase of Mission Kakatiya. The works related to strengthening of earth bunds were pending due to moisture problem,
he added.
The SE said all the tanks that were taken up for restoration under Mission Kakatiya, received water to full tank level (FTL) due to the recent rains. According to the officials figures, in addition to the tanks resorted under Mission Kakatiya, another 1,500 tanks received water full tank level.
The farmers were also upbeat in the district with the availability of sufficient water in the tanks for another two crop seasons. The officials of Agriculture department were confident that the area of cultivation would increase drastically in the district from Rabi season.
With the good water storage levels in the tanks, the officials are hopeful that there would no water problems for the next two years as the ground water level was improved significantly. The district authorities have prepared proposals to take restoration of 1,000 tanks in the third phase of Mission Kakatiya in the district. It was targeted to complete the restoration of 4,762 tanks.
