Hyderabad: The works on the Phase I of 1,600 MW, of the 4,000 MW thermal power project in Ramagundam Thermal Power Project, is targeted to be completed by February 2020. According to NTPC Regional Executive Director V B Fadnavis, the National Thermal Power Corporation has awarded the contracts to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Alstom Bharat Forge for the first unit of the Rs10,000 crore Phase I project.

Addressing a press conference on the status of works and progress of new projects in the southern region, Fadnavis said the Coal ministry had allocated Mandakini-B coal mine of Odisha and tapering coal linkage from Singareni Collieries Co Ltd.

As far as the solar power projects were concerned, the NTPC has been entrusted with the task to develop 1,900 MW Solar Photo Voltaic Capacity in the southern region and of that 400 MW project would be set up in Mahbubnagar under National Solar Mission. He said once the State government identifies the land, the project would be taken up on development model wherein the developer will acquire the land.

Replying to a question on the NTPC 4,000 MW Pudimadaka (Lalamkoduru) Super Thermal Power Project, proposed to come up close to Visakhapatnam, Fadnavis said NTPC was awaiting fuel (coal) linkage to commence works on the project.

The power major had initially proposed to fire up the ultra mega power project using imported coal when the country was facing coal shortage. But now that there was surplus coal in the country, the Centre had advised them to take up the project based on domestic coal. “We are awaiting linkage to take up the project,” Fadnavis said.

He further added that NTPC has a pipeline of about 9,000 MW of projects in South India. This includes 4,000 MW thermal power project at Ramagundam in Telangana and 4,000 MW thermal power project at Pudimadaka near Visakhapatnam, to be taken up as part of the Act under the States Organisation Act, and other renewable energy projects.

Providing a status update, Fadnavis said 1,200 acres of land has been allocated for the Pudimadaka project. “Once the linkage is in place, we will be able to begin tendering works and award of contracts,” he said.
