Warangal: This year’s Bathukamma fiesta in Warangal is not all about myriad hues of conically stacked flowers, but a path-breaking one too. Thanks to Bala Vikasa Social Service Society (BVSSS), a non-profit outfit, helping communities help themselves, for organising Bathukamma festival at 1,000 Pillars Temple on the first day of the nine-day extravaganza, the pride of Telangana. At a time when efforts are on to project the vibrant festival of the region globally, and to get the Telangana migrants connected to their culture and tradition, the initiative of the Bala Vikasa added more colour to the fete.
The celebration got off to grandeur on Friday with women clad in colourful costumes made their way to play Engilipula Bathukamma, called as on first day. The 1,000 Pillars Temple reverberated with the Bathukamma song presenting a unique picture of devotion and culture. The bliss on the faces of widows clad in traditional dresses and wearing bindi, who played Bathukamma, was beyond words to describe. Making their occasion special was a foreigner - Claire Corriveau, the Communication Officer of the SOPAR from Canada.
As Claire chorused them to play Bathukamma, the joy of well over 100 widows, who participated in the fete coming across from various parts of the district, peaked to new heights.Speaking to The Hans India, Gannoju Rajitha of Wardhannapet, said: “It was an emotion-filled day for me. With Bala Vikasa and other Archaka Sanghams supporting us, we are learning to live upright.”
Bala Vikasa Executive Director S Shoury Reddy said that they have been campaigning to create awareness among the widows about their rights. As part of fighting against social stigma, we invited widows to play Bathukamma.
It’s learnt that Bala Vikasa is also organising the fete for widows in 120 model villages, where they have their branches. This apart, the society will also organise the same at Ainavolu in Warangal district, the abode of Mallikarjuna Swamy temple where an annual fair is famous, and Medak during the ongoing nine-day fiesta.
