Khammam: Farmers in Khammam district will have an opportunity to grab the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) waters through its Phase-II canal for the first time, nearly after a two-decade wait. However, the extension of Kakatiya Canal under SRSP for about 63 kilometers was mooted under Phase-II to provide irrigation facility to a total ayacut of 1.78 lakh hectares (4.40 lakh acres) in Warangal, Khammam and Nalgonda districts, this is the first time that farmers in Palair Assembly constituency are set to receive Godavari waters.

The canal also contemplated to provide 0.384 TMC Ft drinking water to nearby villages.Against this backdrop, the Minister for Roads and Buildings, Tummala Nageswara Rao, on Saturday released water to Khammam district by lifting the gates of canal at DBM 60 near Chinna Vangara village under Thorrur mandal in Warangal district.

He directed the irrigation officials to fill all the tanks in Tirumalayapalem and Kusumanchi mandals (Khammam) as the SRSP is full to brim and receiving abundant inflows for the last few days. It’s learnt that there is an opportunity to fill nearly 60 tanks in Palair Assembly constituency with the development.It’s a godsend opportunity,” the Minister said, referring to the SRSP which got filled for the first time in last four years.

He instructed the officials to take the advice of the irrigation experts if they face any hiccups in the distributor canals.All the tanks in Warangal district have been filled with recent copious rains and only a few tanks in Maripeda mandal needs to be filled with SRSP waters, Palakurthy (Warangal) MLA Errabelli Dayakar Rao said.District Collector D S Lokesh Kumar, Joint Collector D Divya, ZP Chairperson G Kavitha and SRSP engineer Venkateswarlu were among others present.
