Capturing small and memorable moments in life brings magical realism to films, said eminent filmmaker Dhaassyam Tharun Bhascker.

At an interaction session with students in the Department of Communication & Journalism, Osmania University here on Monday, Bhascker, who made ‘Pelli Choopulu’, the runaway success, recalled how he questioned his father who would unfailingly go over to the University.

He revealed that his father had gone on a hunger strike for his friend who lost a seat in engineering after missing out by one mark. “Then, I realised why my father, a student leader then, was very fond of campus. This small incident changed my perspective of small things in life,” he observed.

Commenting that the local film industry was “low on the intellectual plane” as opposed to that of the Western cinema, he wanted filmmakers to think locally and globally. Urging students to read books on script writing, he said one should develop an understanding on the nuances of film making and the formats.

Earlier, in a television interview to J-Hub, Bhasckar shared his journey from poster designing to ‘Pelli Choopulu’. He opined that filmmakers should “depersonalise from the subject” and should not be emotionally attached to the script. He also added that a scriptwriter and a filmmaker should recognise different perspectives to entertain people.

He pointed out that he ventured into film making to showcase his creativity after he felt that corporate and wedding film making was not the right platform. His first shortfilm ‘Spade’, produced for the 48-hour film festival in Bombay, won the “Special mention award”.

His next film ‘Anukokunda’ swept the best movie, best actors and best music awards and was nominated for the Nation’s Best 48-hours’ film festival at Cannes.
