Warangal: TJAC chairman Prof M Kodandaram demanded the TRS government bring out a comprehensive ‘Agriculture Policy’ to protect the interests of the farming community in the State. He addressed farmers at ‘Rythu Garjana’, organised by Telangana Farmers JAC district committee here on Wednesday, aiming at bringing together the community to fight against the anti- farmer policies of the government.

While opposing forcible land acquisition using the GO 123, he said the government should not hurt interests and sentiments of farmers to build irrigation projects. Measures to offer proper rehabilitation to farmers must be ensured before acquiring their lands.

Even after achieving statehood to Telangana by hard struggle, the farmers in the State were not able to lead a respectable life, he said while calling upon the farming community to stand united to protect their interests.Hundreds of farmers, mostly small and marginal land holders, were still committing suicides in separate Telangana.

The farmers were being exploited by revenue, agriculture, marketing and electricity departments, and banks, seeds and fertilisers traders, he lamented. ‘The issue could be addressed only if the farmers stage collective fight,’ the TJAC chairman asserted.

Former High Court judge B Chandra Kumar speaking on the occasion expressed concern over lack of interest among youth to take up agriculture. Agriculture crisis and faulty policies of governments were discouraging youth to consider agriculture as a livelihood option.

The State and Central governments, which dole out thousands of crores of subsidies and loan waiver to corporate houses, were not showing a minimum courtesy towards farmers, he pointed out. The JAC Warangal district convener Prof K Venkata Narayana told farmers to form JACs at each village.

The State government was not supporting farmers as it often claims. Like many sections in the society farmers were being neglected in separate Telangana. The government’s failure to waive crops at a go making the banks to refuse issue fresh loans, he added.

The JAC leaders Prof Yadagiracharyulu, M Chander Rao, M Venkanna, Odela Rajaiah, B Ramulu, Prof Bhadru Naik, K Laxma Reddy, Somidi Srinivas, J Damodar, K Raghunath Reddy, Ch Rajender and others were present.The families of farmers who committed suicides attended
the meeting.Setting up an Agriculture Corporation, ex-gratia to deceased farmers’ families, offering loan waiver at one go, encouraging organic farming and Rs 20, 000 compensation to crops damaged due to recent rains were among the resolutions were passed at the meeting.
