Hyderabad: In a move to protect the interests of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the utilisation of Krishna waters, the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) would enforce a new mechanism from November this year for the prompt drawal of assured waters allocated to the two States every month.

Under the new system, the State which utilised excess water would have to compensate the counterpart by allowing the other State to draw its own share of water every month. Regular joint inspection teams would monitor water inflows and outflows at all important dams and conduct monthly review on the utilisation of waters.

The KRMB would deploy the joint inspection teams (comprising engineers from two States) at Pothireddypadu and Banakacharla Head Regulators, Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi, Srisailam dam, left and right bank canals, Nagarjuna Sagar dam, left and right bank canals, Jurala, Kalwakurthy, Nettempadu, Bheema and Koilsagar projects.

The teams would inspect the projects regularly and record the drawing of water by the two States on day-to-day basis. Based on the monthly report, the Board would conduct a meeting with the top irrigation officials of the two States and come to the rescue of the two States in the optimum usage of assured water.

Telangana has been allocated 299 tmc ft of water and the AP has been given right to utilise to draw 512 tmc ft assured water in Krishna. The Telangana State has been fighting against the AP government over excess release of water from Pothireddypadu project while the AP government raised several objections on the release of water from Jurala to Srisailam.

A high-level official said that the joint inspection teams would also be given freedom to conduct surprise visits to the project sites. Based on the decision taken at the recently held Apex Committee meeting chaired by Union Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharthi, the inspection committees would be in place till the telemetry system was installed to measure water discharges at the project sites accurately.
