Hyderabad: Local developmental works under the GHMC limits are suffering as the Corporation has failed to sanction funds to Corporators under the Corporator Funds Scheme.

As per norms, GHMC allots Rs 50 lakh to each councillor to carry out various developmental works in their respective divisions. But with government having failed to release the Corporator funds, they are now facing the ire of the people. It is over eight months since the general body of the GHMC was constituted.

The Corporators say that they have been facing tremendous pressure from the public as no developmental activity could be taken up by them after being elected to power.

They say that during campaigning, they had taken up a detailed study of the local problems and had promised to see that measures would be taken up to resolve them.

RK Puram Corporator Radha Veerannagari said the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K Taraka Rama Rao and Mayor Bonthu Rammohan had asked all the Corporators to take up works to develop their wards and make Hyderabad a global destination but did not bother to release the funds.

Sometime back, GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy had asked the Corporators to send the work estimates in their respective divisions and assured that he would grant funds. Though the proposals were sent about six months back, the Corporation has failed to respond so far, said a Corporator from the ruling party.

Cutting across party lines, the Corporators told ‘The Hans India’ that the residents had been questioning them about bad roads and the sewerage system that is in pathetic condition. They were also questioning us how different they were as compared to previous Corporators.

They had promised that they would prove to be “working Corporators” unlike in the past but were now cutting a sorry figure among the people, they said.

A Corporator from the ruling TRS said that during the poll campaign, she had promised to repair roads, drainage system, solve drinking water problems and install streetlights in her ward but none of the works could be carried out.

She said when she drew the attention of the Minister at a recent party meeting, she was told that the GHMC had been facing budget deficit and the Corporation funds would be available only in the next financial year, she added.
