Hyderabad: Dr MCR HRD Institute organised a blood donation camp here on Friday, which was attended by a large number of faculty and staff members and trainees attending different programmes at the institute.

A number of participants, including Vinod K Agrawal, Institute’s Director-General & EO Spl Chief Secretary, came forward to donate blood on the occasion. The staff members of Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), which included two doctors and four assistants, conducted the camp.

“While we have been organising at least two blood donation camps a year so far, it has now been decided that every first Wednesday of a month will be a blood donation day at Dr MCR HRD Institute, considering the fact that gift of blood is gift of life.

There is no substitute for human blood. Blood cannot be manufactured – it can only come from generous donors,” Agrawal said, adding that the Institute had tied up with NIMS for organising the campaign.

The blood donation camp was preceded by an awareness session on organs donations. Dr Swarna Latha, incharge Head of the Nephrology Department and Coordinator of Jeevandaan, a unit at NIMS which facilitates organs donation, said the “donor scene” in India was extremely dismal resulting in many patients on the waiting list, succumbing to fatal heath complications as they did not receive organs in time.

She underlined the need for creating wider awareness about organs donation, especially at the grassroots levels, in order to remove the colossal barriers of myths and superstitions surrounding organ donations, which come in the way of taking this initiative forward.

“Interested persons can pledge during their lifetime, that after death, the organs from their body can be used for transplantation to help terminally ill patients get a new lease of life,” she added.

The next “Awareness Session on Organs Donation” and “Blood Donation Day” will be held on November 1 and 2, respectively at Dr MCR HRD Institute.
