Hyderabad: State government has undertaken a task of drawing up a blueprint to turn the agriculture into a profitable occupation and thus putting an end to the spate of suicides by farmers.

Top officials in the Chief Minister’s Office told The Hans India that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had directed the district Collectors and the officials of the Agriculture Department to focus their attention on reviving agriculture.

He instructed the officials to prepare a detailed report on existing farming pattern, irrigation facilities, soil health and potentiality of commercial crops.

Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma and Secretary to Agricultural C Parthasarathi have been assigned the task of submitting a status report on the agriculture and allied sectors in all the 31 districts. The status report is intended to find out the number of farmers who have fallen into debt trap and the progress in the implementation of loan waiver scheme.

The Chief Minister, sources have said, is planning to promote the State as agricultural hub by exploiting natural resources. KCR is confident that ongoing irrigation projects would help the State to promote farming in a big way in the next three years.

The plan includes promotion of polyhouse farming, encouraging farmers to produce huge quantity of seeds on their own, multiply pulses and horticulture production and inviting huge investments in allied sectors like poultry, dairy and fisheries. Under the plan of action, every farmer would get all assistance including adoption of modern farm techniques, quality seeds and regular monitoring of crops by the
official team.

Farmers would also be educated on the availability of bank loans and the need for prompt repayment. Apart from traditional crops like paddy, cotton and chilli, the government is seriously planning to encourage farmers to go in for commercial crops. The optimum utilisation of water and other natural resources would take a centre stage in the action plan.

As part of promoting allied sectors, government has already drawn up an action plan to promote aqua farming in a big way. The government has decided to permit aquaculture in all agricultural lands with lesser fertility. The government recently supplied nearly 40 crore fingerlings free of cost to cooperative societies.
